Research in the Atmospheric Radiation Analysis ( ARA) group at LMD focuses on the analysis of the variability and evolution of the Earth climate through the coupling of space-based and in situ observations and the modelling of the atmospheric circulation and climate. The group has a long experience in the development and application of a variety of forward and inverse methods related to the analysis of the radiative transfer in the Earth and planetary atmospheres. For the purpose of deriving at global scale, long time series of key Earth climate variables (temperature, humidity, cloud fields mesoscale and microphysical properties, concentration of the main greenhouse gases, aerosols characteristics as optical depth and altitude, surface characteristics as temperature and emissivity, etc.) observations of moderate to high spectral resolution sounders (radiometers, spectrometers, interferometers) on board meteorological satellites are analyzed. Since the early 2000's a substantial part of the research activities is devoted to the interpretation of high spectral resolution vertical or limb sounders observations involving the reanalysis of spectroscopic or climatic databases and the derivation of new physico-statistical inference tools.
